Creative Movement Dance Class

This class will introduce children to the fundamental skills of modern dance with an emphasis on quality and expansion of movement. Body, posture, and movement awareness are stressed along with technique. Structured dance exercises along with improvisations allow students to discover their own natural and expressive movement. Children will get an introduction to modern dance and some of its legends (Martha Graham, Lester Horton, José Limon, and others) by learning basic premises such as the contraction, fall and recovery, and release. Emphasis is on having fun with moving in different ways and expanding their movement repertoire while gaining basic technique.

Modern/Jazz Dance Class

This class gets students dancing with energy and expression to varied music from standard jazz tunes to musical theater and pop songs. Class will start with stretches and strength building exercises and continue to expand body awareness through isolations and classical jazz movements. Dancers will explore different qualities as they move through space and across the floor as they complete center combinations, finishing with a choreographed dance. Much focus is given to rhythm and learning how to interpret music with movement, as well as giving children freedom of expression. Children will have fun while gaining technique, self-esteem, expression, musicality, and teamwork skills as they refine movement together.
